Thoughts on Ozzy Osbourne's Scream

Not gonna get it. No way. Not a chance. First of all, he starts off by naming it Soul Sucka, like it's some kind of vampire rap album. Then he changes it to the name of an album by the great Tony Martin, the most underrated Black Sabbath vocalist. But that's not even the worst of it.

It looks like somebody (possibly from the Ozzy camp) messed with Zakk Wylde's Wikipedia page, because there's nothing about this anymore, but Ozzy just dumped Wylde without even telling him about it. He heard that he wasn't going to be playing on this album through the media, instead of hearing it from his friend of 20 years and godfather of his son. Most likely this is Sharon's doing (I can't help but think she was behind Ozzy's last couple of sellout albums, either). And letting Black Label Society headline the second stage at Ozzfest doesn't even come close to making up for it.

No Ozzy, I will not get this one. You are without a doubt the godfather of heavy metal, but in your mental state you haven't done anything good in the last ten years. It's time to retire.

  1. I love Ozzy's early stuff, but man I have not gotten into anything in years. I think pretty much since The Osbournes show, his credibility has been shot. I was interested in hearing the album because Gus G., the fantastic guitarist from Firewind and a bunch of other bands has taken over, but he did not actually have any creative control on this one.

  2. Zakk Wylde is one of the greatest guitarists ever to have lived (listen to the first three BLS albums for proof). I love Firewind but on guitar there's no comparison.

Around 2001 I read an interview with Wylde, and he was pissed that he didn't have any creative control with Down to Earth (he's not credited as a writer on any track--contrast that with Ozzmosis, where he was a writer on 7 out of 10). He complained that a bunch of people who can't play Randy Rhoades solos were writing the music.

  3. You're missing out, Scream is a really great album and a lot heavier than Black Rain was. He's still making amazing music judging by all the fans he's still got and gaining.
