Metal Briefs: More Short Briefs of 2013

Two by Two

Two-song releases comprise a lot of my listening lately. It only seems fitting they get two-sentence reviews.

Aktor: I Am the Psychic Wars
4 out of 5 stars

This sounds almost exactly like Dawnbringer's last two albums, but with prominent synths added to the mix. Pretty fucking rad.

Corrections House: Hoax the System/Grin with a Purpose 7"
4 out of 5 stars

Corrections House sounds like Neurosis composed the most bad-ass movie soundtrack imaginable. The vocals sound like Zack De La Rocha, if Zack De La Rocha wasn't a tool and his voice sounded awesome instead of annoying.

Scout Paré-Phillips: Fields of Ash 7"
4.5 out of 5 stars

This is some beautiful, entrancing, simultaneously ethereal and intense folk music from the female vocalist of The Sterling Sisters. It's even better than her main band.

Bonus: One-Song, One Sentence Review

Nothing: Dig (Radio Single)
3.5 out of 5 stars

I'm not exactly sure, but I'd say this is some shoegaze-inflected pop/rock, and it's not bad.
